We all know that our furry friends provide us with companionship and unconditional love. But did you know that they can also be our protectors? One heroic cat in particular, Bandit, is being hailed as a local hero after helping to prevent an armed robbery in the middle of the night.
Bandit’s owner, Greg Hertwig, runs a 24-hour convenience store in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Earlier this month, Hertwig was working the late shift when he heard his cat meowing loudly and scratching at the door leading to the shop.
Hertwig said that he initially thought Bandit just wanted to come inside and cuddle. “I had no idea what was going on,” Hertwig said. But when he went to let Bandit in, he realized that something was definitely off.
“I could see in his eyes that he was really worked up about something,” Hertwig said. “So I took him over to where I could see outside, and sure enough there was somebody out there by the ATM.”
Hertwig called the police, and the would-be thief fled the scene before they arrived. Officials believe that the robber was attempting to break into the machine using a power drill, but Bandit’s loud meowing scared him off.
“I’m just glad that he was here because God knows what could have happened,” Hertwig said of his feline friend.
Hertwig has since installed an outdoor camera facing the ATM so that he can keep an eye on things—but he says Bandit will always be his first line of defense. “He’s my hero,” Hertwig said of his furry friend.
