At a recent House Oversight Committee hearing, Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas launched into a racially charged rant about redistricting in her home state. As a result of the 2020 Census, Texas gained two seats in the House of Representatives, leading to a re-drawing of the state’s congressional districts.
Crockett began her tirade by asking Census Bureau Director Robert L. Santos if he knew the racial composition of the increase in Texas’ population. She stated, “I want to make sure that we — we really get to the nitty-gritty on Texas, because this is — this is hilarious to me.” Crockett went on to claim that there was a significant undercount in Texas due to a combination of reasons.
She then revealed that only 180,000 of the 4 million people added to Texas’ population were Anglos, or white people. According to Crockett, this amounted to only 95 percent of the people added, with minority populations being undercounted. She continued, “Somehow the way that they do their Republican math in the state of Texas, that amounted to 2 new white seats. Guess what? White Republican seats.”
It is worth noting that former President Donald Trump gained support among Hispanic and black voters in the 2020 election, largely due to his policies on the economy and immigration. Despite this, Crockett is insistent that white Republicans are manipulating the system in Texas to maintain their power.
This is not the first time Crockett has gone off the rails during a congressional hearing. In a previous hearing, she claimed that black people were “stolen” and “didn’t ask” to be in the United States. During another hearing, Crockett claimed that a Republican witness was afraid to listen to a “qualified black woman” like Vice President Kamala Harris.
It seems that Crockett has a habit of making inflammatory remarks, especially when it comes to issues of race. While redistricting is a sensitive and important issue, her rant about “Republican math” and “white seats” in Texas does little to further the discussion in a productive manner.
As tensions continue to rise in Congress, it is important for elected officials like Crockett to approach discussions with respect and civility. Instead of launching into unhinged rants, they should focus on finding solutions and working towards a more united country.
