Watch: Fort Myers Council in Tears Over ICE Cooperation, No Joke!

The recent meeting of the Fort Myers, Florida City Council, which descended into tears and hand-holding over the decision to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), is a stark reminder of the weakness and emotional fragility that has infiltrated local governance. The council was tasked with a straightforward decision: whether to grant local police the authority to question individuals suspected of being in the U.S. illegally and process them for immigration violations if arrested for a crime. This is not an unreasonable request, especially in a nation where the rule of law is supposed to be paramount. Yet, the council’s inability to reach a decision—resulting in a 3-3 tie—and the subsequent emotional breakdown of its members, is a pathetic display of leadership failure.

WINK News reported that the proposed agreement would have allowed Fort Myers police officers to question individuals suspected of being in the U.S. illegally and process them for immigration violations if arrested for a crime. Additionally, officers would have been able to make arrests without a warrant if they believed someone was violating immigration laws and might escape before a warrant could be obtained. These measures are not draconian; they are common-sense steps to ensure that local law enforcement can effectively cooperate with federal agencies to uphold immigration laws. Yet, the council members who opposed the measure chose to cry and hold hands instead of taking a firm stance on an issue that directly impacts public safety and national security.

The Florida Phoenix further highlighted the gravity of the situation, reporting that Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has threatened the council members with removal from office if they fail to comply with state laws requiring cooperation with ICE. Uthmeier, who assumed his role just a month ago, warned the council that Governor Ron DeSantis could remove them from office if they continued to obstruct efforts to enforce immigration laws. In a letter to the council, Uthmeier wrote, “Failure to correct the Council’s actions will result in the enforcement of all applicable civil and criminal penalties, including but not limited to being held in contempt, declaratory or injunctive relief, and removal from office by the Governor.”

This is not a college campus student council; these are elected officials responsible for the governance of a city. Their inability to act decisively on such a critical issue is a disservice to the citizens they represent. The liberal media, however, has predictably framed this as a heartwarming display of empathy and resistance against so-called “harsh” immigration policies. This narrative is not only misleading but dangerous. It undermines the rule of law and encourages lawlessness, all while portraying those who enforce the law as villains.

President Donald Trump has consistently advocated for strong immigration policies that prioritize the safety and security of American citizens. His administration’s efforts to strengthen border security and enforce immigration laws have been met with relentless opposition from the left, but they are necessary to protect the nation’s sovereignty. The Fort Myers City Council’s failure to cooperate with ICE is a microcosm of the broader resistance to Trump’s policies, which are designed to uphold the law and protect American communities.
