In a fiery debate on CNN Monday, former Trump campaign official Giancarlo Sopo and commentator Maria Cardona clashed over the historic number of Latino voters who supported President-elect Donald Trump in the recent election.
Despite Trump’s gains with Hispanic voters, Cardona warned that his plan to enact mass deportations on illegal immigrants will lead to “cruelty” and family separation, which she suggested will lead to division and backlash among Latinos. Sopo argued that immigration is a top issue for Hispanic voters and that strong border policies are necessary for the safety and prosperity of the United States.
“Immigration was cited as one of the top 5 issues for Hispanics for voting against Kamala Harris,” Sopo stated. “I actually do not anticipate any kind of major backlash to any kind of border enforcement.”
But Cardona pushed back, saying, “You know so much better than what you are spouting right now.” She warned that Trump’s plan to deport millions of illegal immigrants will lead to pain and cruelty within the Hispanic community, and will even impact everyday American citizens.
“If the incoming Trump administration goes through with this, here’s the people they’re gonna go after,” she said, listing off examples such as “your kids’ classmates, the delivery guy, the person who takes care of your kids, the people who work in restaurants, and the business owners in your community.”
Sopo argued that the American voters did not vote for a potentially multi-billion dollar cost to deport illegal immigrants, and that elites in Washington, D.C. should not speak on behalf of the Hispanic community.
“The Hispanic community is sick and tired of D.C. elites pulling on our heartstrings,” he stated. “We’re telling people loud and clear, you do not speak on our behalf. We are worried about prosperity.”
Surveys have shown that an increasing number of Hispanic Americans, particularly Latino men, supported Trump’s mass deportation plan and trusted him over the Democrats to handle the illegal immigration crisis. Trump’s unprecedented win in Starr County, Texas – a predominantly Hispanic border county – further solidifies his support among this demographic.
Hispanics value safety and prosperity for both their community and the country as a whole. As more and more Hispanics support Trump’s policies, it is time for Democrats and the media to listen and address the concerns of this important voter bloc.

Cardona’s rhetoric isn’t surprising. The MSM machine has made its empire by fear-mongering but it was worth watching her get schooled by Sopo.
