In Michigan, law enforcement apprehended a 10-year-old boy who stole an SUV and led police on a high-speed chase along Interstate 75. The incident happened in Buena Vista while the boy was visiting relatives. He reportedly took the vehicle to visit his mother over Memorial Day weekend. The chase involved police and OnStar technology, with a surprising detour into nearby woods.
The Buick Encore SUV was stolen from a residence on Hess Avenue in Buena Vista. OnStar, the subscription-based vehicle service, called Saginaw County Central Dispatch to inform them that the stolen SUV was heading south on Interstate 75. Michigan State Police located the vehicle near the Birch Run exit. However, the young driver did not comply with their attempts to bring the vehicle to a halt.
Troopers recorded dashcam footage showing a stolen vehicle flashing its hazard lights and weaving between lanes. The police followed the boy for around a mile, switched on their lights and sirens, and managed to disable the car remotely. The public was in danger during the chase, but it ended when the stolen SUV scraped a guardrail and stopped.
After the vehicle was stopped, a young boy got out of the car and tried to run away into the woods. The troopers were able to catch him quickly, so no one was hurt. The situation could have been very dangerous considering the chase, but thankfully it ended without any disastrous consequences.
On Monday, it was reported that the 10-year-old boy who was taken into custody and transported to the Saginaw County Juvenile Detention Center is no longer in custody. The child is facing a number of charges, including unlawfully driving away a motor vehicle, fourth-degree fleeing and eluding police, and assaulting, resisting, or obstructing police.
