A fisherman had a scary moment when an alligator charged at him from a pond in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The incident was caught on video by a bystander who was riding a bike with his family.
Micah Kimberlin, who recorded the video, said he saw the alligator swimming towards the fisherman at Shipyard Plantation on Tuesday evening. He decided to take out his phone and capture the scene.
The video, which has gone viral on social media, shows the fisherman backing away from the water as the alligator emerges from the pond and lunges at him. The fisherman manages to escape unharmed as the alligator quickly returns to the water.
Kimberlin said he was shocked by what he witnessed and hoped the fisherman was OK. He also said he had never seen anything like that before and that it was a reminder of how wild nature can be.
Alligators are common in South Carolina, especially in the coastal regions. The state’s Department of Natural Resources estimates that there are about 100,000 alligators in the state. They are usually shy and avoid humans, but they can become aggressive if they feel threatened or if they are fed by people. Feeding alligators is illegal in South Carolina and can cause them to lose their natural fear of humans and associate them with food.
If you encounter an alligator, experts advise you to keep your distance and not to provoke it. If an alligator attacks you, you should fight back by hitting its eyes or nose, which are sensitive areas. Hopefully, this will never happen, but you honestly never know.
Personally, I live in an area that isn’t supposed to have alligators, but for some reason, the government thought that it would be a good idea to bring some up here to get rid of beavers. Now we just have beavers and alligators.
