The post in question featured a photograph of seashells arranged to spell the numbers “8647.” While Comey claimed innocence, insisting he merely found the formation “clever,” critics—including high-ranking officials—were quick to highlight the sinister implications. The term “86” is widely understood in certain circles as slang for killing or eliminating someone, a fact that makes Comey’s post dangerously ambiguous at best. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard didn’t mince words, telling Fox News that Comey should be arrested for what she deemed a clear threat against the president.
Yet, instead of acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Comey doubled down during his MSNBC interview, telling host Nicolle Wallace:
“Well I regret the distraction and the controversy around it. But again, it’s hard to have regret about something that even in hindsight looks to me to be totally innocent for the reasons you said… But yeah, I didn’t have a gut check. In the Trump-era, I’ve been investigated a lot, audited a lot, and so it’s not my first rodeo.”
