Resurfaced Post Revives Allegations That Ilhan Omar Leaked Information to Somali Leaders

A Resurfaced Post Reopens the Fight

A January 2024 post from Somaliland politician Ali Hassan Mohamed has resurfaced as Rep. Ilhan Omar faces intense scrutiny over several controversies. The report says the Department of Homeland Security raided Omar’s Washington, D.C., home on October 12 in connection with reported allegations of immigration fraud. Mohamed’s post accused Omar of leaking information to Somali leaders during a December 2022 visit to Garowe. He claimed the information involved a meeting between Somaliland’s president and the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where Omar was then a member. He also alleged that Omar urged Somali leaders to take action against Somaliland before the Las-Anod conflict began the following month. Those are serious accusations, but the post itself is not an official finding.

What the Viral Posts Alleged

The allegation gained fresh attention after several posts on X recirculated it. One post from Libs of TikTok described the claim as Omar sharing classified information from the Foreign Affairs Committee with Somali leaders, labeled it “TREASON,” and tagged the Justice Department. Another post from Insider Wire said a former Somaliland minister accused Omar of leaking information about a congressional meeting to Somali leaders. Social media is very good at turning an old claim into a new firestorm, but viral repetition does not establish that an allegation is true. The central question remains whether evidence beyond Mohamed’s original statement can verify what happened.

Somaliland’s Stake in the Dispute

Mohamed’s background matters when weighing the claim. He served as an official in Somaliland, an autonomous region and self-declared independent state in northwestern Somalia. Somaliland broke away from Somalia and strongly opposes the country’s federal government. That gives Mohamed and other Somaliland representatives a clear political interest in seeing Somalia-friendly figures such as Omar face criticism. As of the report, no consequential evidence had emerged to disprove his claims. That does not prove the accusation, either. It simply leaves the public with a disputed statement, political motives on both sides, and unanswered questions.

Omar’s Somalia Trip and Public Remarks

Some established facts explain why the accusation has drawn attention. Voice of America reported that Omar visited Somalia in December 2022 and met with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, and other members of the country’s cabinet and parliament. In January 2024, Omar also spoke in Minneapolis to Somalis about a recent election in Somalia, delivering her remarks in Somali. According to a translation reported by USA Today, she said, “We should have this confidence in ourselves as Somalis. We live in this country. We are taxpayers in this country. This country is one where one of your daughters sits in Congress. While I am in Congress, no one will take Somalia’s sea. The United States will not back others to rob us.” Those remarks reflect her public interest in Somalia’s affairs, but they do not by themselves confirm the leak allegation.
