A Deadly Attack in Washington Park
Washington Park, Illinois, is grieving after a horrific dog attack claimed the life of 68-year-old James L. Gibson on Thursday night. According to reports cited by police, Gibson was mauled by at least five dogs around 10:45 p.m. in the 2100 block of N. 49th Street and died at the scene. Washington Park police reportedly shot three of the dogs, while the others ran away. Early reports described the animals as “mixed breed” dogs, while the original report identified them as pit bulls. Either way, the result is the same and it is heartbreaking: an elderly man is dead, and a neighborhood that says it had been warning about these animals is left asking why it had to come to this.
Neighbors Say the Fear Was Not New
FOX 2 reported that people living in the area said they had dealt with a pack of wandering dogs for years and feared something terrible might eventually happen. Police investigators reportedly believe the dogs were strays, but residents on 49th Street disputed that idea. Aretha Harper, who lives nearby, told FOX 2 she had encountered the same dogs just hours before the fatal attack. She said the dogs were familiar to people in the neighborhood and that residents were usually able to shoo them away, but one of the dogs followed her up her front steps on Thursday. That is not a normal neighborhood nuisance. That is a public safety problem walking around on four legs.

The story drew more attention after a social media post claimed the dogs could be seen in Google Street View images from the area a few months earlier. That detail, if accurate, only adds to the frustration for residents who say this pack had been roaming for a long time. Nobody wants to see government overreach in every corner of life, but basic public safety is not some wild luxury item. Families should be able to walk outside without wondering if a pack of aggressive dogs is waiting nearby.

Local Coverage Shows the Community’s Concern
