People who have been blessed in their life have the opportunity and obligation to bless others in return. We are blessed so that we can bless others. Hody Childress was an 80-year-old farmer from Geraldine, Alabama who had a secret that he kept for 10 years. Every month, he would go to the local pharmacy and drop off a $100 bill to help pay for medicine for those in need. His generous act of kindness went unnoticed until after his death on New Year’s Day.
The pharmacist, Brooke Walker, said she was shocked when she found out about Childress’s generosity. She said that every month he would come in with the money and ask her to use it to help people buy their medicine. He never asked for anything in return and always told her to tell people it was “a blessing from the Lord” if they asked where the money came from.
Childress’s kind deed has inspired others in his community to follow suit. His family has set up a fund in his honor that will be used to continue helping those who cannot afford their medication. The fund is already receiving donations from all over the country as people are moved by Childress’s story of selflessness and compassion.
In addition to setting up the fund, Childress’s family has also started a campaign called “Pay It Forward Hody Style” which encourages people to do random acts of kindness in his memory. They are hoping that these small gestures will make a difference in someone else’s life just like Childress did with his monthly visits to the pharmacy.
Hody Childress may no longer be with us but his legacy lives on through the kindness he showed others throughout his life. His story is an inspiration to us all and serves as a reminder that even small acts of kindness can have a big impact on someone else’s life.
