A Family Horror in Mechanicville
Four children, Harper Harmon, 13, Hudson Harmon, 11, and 10-year-old twins Gavin and Gracelynn Harmon, were found dead on June 23 inside the Mechanicville, New York, apartment of their grandmother, Amy Steadman, 64. Their mother, Sarah Myers, 44, was also found dead there. Investigators believe the children were killed on June 10, nearly two weeks before their decomposing bodies were discovered during a welfare check. This is the kind of story that stops decent people cold. No political spin is needed here. Four children are gone, and the details released by police point to a calculated act carried out by the very adults who were supposed to protect them.
Toxicology Results Point to Poisoning
Toxicology results showed diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl, and kratom, a psychoactive substance with opioid-like effects, in the children’s blood, according to sources who spoke with Albany’s WNYT NewsChannel 13. The findings were first reported nationally by the New York Post. Police say Myers and Steadman communicated by text message about obtaining medications, poisoning the children, and hiding the plan. Investigators say some messages appeared to show the two coordinating while the killings were happening. One reported message indicated the drugs were not working as planned and that at least one child had realized what was happening. That detail is almost too painful to write, but it matters because it shows why investigators are treating this as intentional, not accidental.
Police Say Gavin Fought for His Life
According to investigators, Gavin was stabbed repeatedly after the poisoning attempt failed. Police said he had defensive wounds, indicating the 10-year-old fought for his life. Investigators also found disturbing internet searches on Steadman’s phone involving fatal stabbing locations and the carotid artery, according to ABC News. Mechanicville Police Chief Bill Rabbitt said the evidence indicates all four children were intentionally poisoned and that Gavin was also fatally stabbed. Rabbitt put it plainly: “Amy Steadman and Sarah Myers consistently portrayed these murders as a way to protect the children. Whatever they believed to justify their actions, the murder of four children cannot be described as protection.” That statement should not need saying, yet here we are.
A Custody Fight Was Coming to a Head
Police say Myers and Steadman left handwritten notes accusing the children’s father, Brady Harmon, of abuse and claiming the killings were necessary to “protect” the children. Investigators said they have been unable to substantiate those accusations, and Harmon has categorically denied abusing his children. The children were scheduled to spend the summer with their father in Utah under a court-ordered custody agreement, from July 1 through September 1. Harmon reportedly had not seen them in person for more than six years. Court records reviewed by CBS6 Albany showed Myers had school-year custody, while Harmon was entitled to uninterrupted summer parenting time, video calls, holidays, and birthdays. Myers was also scheduled to appear before a Utah court on June 29 over allegations that she interfered with Harmon’s communication with the children and withheld information.
