US Olympic Polo Star Maggie Steffens Honors Late Sister-in-law at Paris Games
US Olympic polo star, Maggie Steffens, will be competing in the Paris Games with a heavy heart but an unwavering spirit. A representative for the US Women’s Water Polo team confirmed to PEOPLE that Steffens’ sister-in-law, Lulu, tragically passed away while in Paris to support her. Lulu was the younger sister of Steffens’ husband, Bobby Conner, and was only 26 when she suffered a fatal medical emergency.
Lulu: A Light That Continues to Shine
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Steffens shared her fond memories of Lulu. She described her late sister-in-law as a beacon of light and joy who embodied the Olympic spirit. “She is so present at the Olympics. She was somebody that brought joy to everybody she was with and to everything she did,” said Steffens.
Lulu was known for her love of travel and artistry. She served as a camp counselor and was recognized for giving her all in every endeavor. As Steffens competes in the games, she aims to channel Lulu’s spirit and honor the light that she always brought.
Remembering Lulu at the Games
The cause of Lulu’s untimely death has not been officially released by her family yet. However, Bobby Conner has decided to stay in Paris to provide support for his wife as she pursues her fourth gold medal. “And Lulu is here. She’s here [in Paris],” Steffens added. “And I think that’s something that’s uniting us all and we hope to make her proud.”
Lulu’s Artistic Legacy Lives On
Lulu’s creative spirit continues to be felt in Paris through the art she left behind, including unique clocks similar to those worn by rapper Flavor Flav. One of these clocks was recently received by Flav himself, who shared a video of him wearing it on his Instagram account.
“She was really excited about Flavor Flav being a part of our team, and she loves our team,” Steffens said. “She ended up making clocks for Flavor Flav. He has one now, and then she made them for the families to wear on the back.”
Team USA Continues the Fight
The Women’s Water Polo preliminary round is set to continue on July 31, with Team USA playing against Italy. The top four countries will then progress to the quarterfinals scheduled for August 6, and the medal matches will begin on August 10.
Final Thoughts
In the face of tragedy, Maggie Steffens and Team USA continue to compete with resilience and determination. They carry Lulu’s spirit with them as they strive for victory in the Olympic Games. As Steffens competes, she believes that Lulu’s light continues to shine brightly.
