Trump Blasts ABC Reporter for Linking Pool Repairs to Iran Conflict

Trump Checks the Work at the Lincoln Memorial

President Trump was back at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on Thursday evening, and this time he drove through to inspect the renovation work and greet the contractors doing the job. Last month, Trump said the pool was “filthy” and promised it would be restored to a much better look, with water colored “American flag blue.” The project has drawn attention not just because it is in a major national landmark, but because Trump says the cost is about $1.5 million, far less than the $34 million Obama reportedly spent on the Reflecting Pool. That kind of math tends to make taxpayers perk up a little, unless of course they are too busy pretending government waste is a myth. Trump made it clear he wants the nation’s capital to look sharp, clean, and worthy of the people who built it.

A Reporter Asks, Trump Fires Back

As Trump talked with reporters, an ABC News reporter tried to tie the renovation to the conflict with Iran and rising gas prices, asking why he was focusing on the Reflecting Pool during a tense moment overseas. Trump did not waste any time with a polite seminar on priorities. He snapped back that he wants the country to be “beautiful and safe,” and he called the place a disgusting mess before the cleanup began. Trump said crews had to remove 11 or 12 truckloads of filth from the water, which is a pretty strong argument that the pool needed more than a nice wish and a ribbon-cutting photo. He then blasted the question as stupid and said the reporter and her network were part of the usual fake-news routine. Whether people love Trump or not, he clearly believes public spaces should not look like they were neglected by a bored college dropout with a leaf blower and no standards.

Trump’s Point Was Bigger Than a Pool

Trump’s response was really about more than one renovation project. He argued that beauty, order, and pride matter, and that a nation shows its character in the condition of its public places. That is not some wild idea cooked up by Washington consultants in expensive shoes. It is basic common sense. If leaders can find money for endless nonsense, then surely they can find a way to clean up one of the most famous spots in America without turning it into a political science lecture. Trump’s supporters will see this as another example of him doing what he always does, which is calling out ugly messes and demanding better. The country could use a lot more of that attitude and a lot less hand-wringing from people who seem offended whenever something gets fixed.
