Fatal Collision On The Fox River
A day on the Fox River in Illinois turned into a nightmare Saturday afternoon when a pontoon boat allegedly operated by 45-year-old Richard Stevenson of Lisle slammed into another boat near McHenry County. Authorities say two people were on the boat that was hit. One of them, a woman whose name had not been released as of Sunday night, was killed. The other person was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The damage to the struck boat was described as extensive, which tells you just how violent this crash was. This was not a bad turn at the dock or a harmless weekend mistake. It was the kind of preventable tragedy that leaves a family shattered and a community asking how it was allowed to happen.
Neighbors Say They Saw Trouble Coming
People who live along the river reportedly captured video of the pontoon moving at high speed before the crash. Neighbors told local media they saw the same pontoon racing up and down the river, including in a no-wake zone, where boaters are supposed to slow down to protect everyone else on the water. One neighbor said he was outside with his daughter when he heard the boat speed past. Another video was reportedly taken about a minute before the crash downriver around 3 p.m. Some neighbors estimated the pontoon was traveling around 70 miles per hour. On a river shared by families, fishermen, and regular folks trying to enjoy a summer day, that is not recreation. That is rolling the dice with other people’s lives.
Charges And Alcohol Test
Officials say Stevenson was taken into custody around 4:30 a.m. Sunday and charged with reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence. According to reports, authorities found him in trees near the shoreline where his pontoon had come to rest. Two other people who had been on the pontoon reportedly left before law enforcement arrived. Stevenson was taken to Northwestern Hospital in McHenry, where testing showed a blood alcohol concentration of .200, according to authorities. Illinois’ legal limit is .08. Witnesses also told officers Stevenson had been drinking throughout the day while operating the boat on the Chain O’ Lakes and the Fox River at high rates of speed. If those facts hold up in court, this is not complicated. Personal freedom comes with personal responsibility, and that is especially true when you are behind the wheel of anything with an engine.

Public Safety Cannot Be Optional
Boating laws are not decorative suggestions printed for the fun of it. No-wake zones exist because water does not forgive stupidity, and neither do high-speed collisions. Conservatives believe in liberty, but liberty is not a license to endanger innocent people while allegedly drunk and flying down a river like it is a private racetrack. The justice system now has the job of sorting out every fact, hearing the evidence, and holding the responsible party accountable under the law.
