Hirono Turns a Confirmation Hearing Into a DOJ Showdown
Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii came out swinging during Todd Blanche’s Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing, using her time to accuse Blanche and the Trump administration of turning the Justice Department into a political weapon. Hirono opened with the same personal conduct questions she often asks nominees, including whether they had ever made unwanted requests for sexual favors or faced discipline or settlements tied to sexual harassment or assault. From there, the hearing quickly shifted into a long attack on President Trump, with Hirono accusing him of using DOJ to target political enemies, reward allies, and interfere with elections. Blanche was given little room to answer as Hirono rolled through her list of claims, which is one way to run a hearing if the goal is less “oversight” and more “cable news audition.”
Democrats Warn About Weaponization While Ignoring Their Own Record
Hirono argued that Blanche would continue what she called a corrupt Trump Justice Department, even suggesting it could be called the “Department of Retribution and Corruption.” She also criticized pardons for January 6 defendants, the idea of a fund to compensate people who say they were abused by the justice system, DOJ election actions involving states, cryptocurrency enforcement changes, and the department’s handling of the Epstein files. The problem for Democrats is that their outrage arrives with a lot of baggage. Republicans have long argued that under Joe Biden, federal power was used against Trump, his allies, pro-life Americans, concerned parents, Catholics, and other conservatives. Democrats called that accountability. Now that the shoe may be on the other foot, they have suddenly discovered the Constitution tucked behind the sofa cushions.
Grassley Fires Back: “Spare Me the Outrage”
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa did not let the moment pass quietly. After Hirono’s questioning, Grassley pushed back hard, telling Democrats, “I wish you’d spare me the outrage!” He said Democrats had “zero credibility” on the issue because they supported Biden while his Justice Department pursued conservatives and Trump allies. Grassley pointed to what he described as Biden-era targeting of President Trump, congressional Republicans, parents, Catholics, and conservative Americans across the country. His message was direct: Democrats cannot cheer when federal power is aimed at their opponents, then act shocked when Republicans demand accountability from the same system. That is not principle. That is politics wearing a cheap Halloween mask.
Grassley Points to Jack Smith Records and Other DOJ Cases
Grassley also referenced DOJ records he said showed former Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigators reviewed the contents of text messages sent by 44 members of Congress during the Operation Arctic Frost investigation. That claim, if accurate, raises serious questions about how far the Biden Justice Department went in pursuing its political targets. Grassley also cited current matters involving the Southern Poverty Law Center and protests involving Don Lemon and ICE demonstrators, arguing those are not political prosecutions but examples of the Justice Department protecting taxpayers, religious liberty, and First Amendment rights. The exchange showed the deep divide over DOJ’s role in American politics: Democrats say Trump’s team is corrupting the department, while Republicans say the left lost the right to lecture after years of defending the very weaponization they now claim to fear.
