Meta Prepares Another Big Round Of Cuts
Meta is reportedly getting ready to cut about 8,000 jobs next month, which would be roughly 10 percent of its workforce. Reuters says the layoffs could begin around May 20, with more cuts possible later in the year. The timing and final size are still not locked in, but the message is plain enough: when a company wants to pour money into the newest shiny object, regular workers often get shown the door first. That is the kind of “innovation” Wall Street loves to clap for while families are the ones left to pay the bill.
AI Spending Keeps Rising Fast
The layoffs come as Zuckerberg keeps pushing hard into artificial intelligence, with Meta reportedly setting aside about $135 billion in capital spending this year. That is an enormous sum, even by Silicon Valley standards, and it shows just how serious the company is about competing with OpenAI and Anthropic. Meta had nearly 79,000 employees worldwide at the end of 2025, according to filings, and Reuters previously reported the company could cut more than 20 percent of its workforce this year. Meta called that earlier report a “speculative report about theoretical approaches,” which is corporate-speak for “please ignore the smoke while we reorganize the fire.”
Tech Companies Are Racing To Reshape
Meta is far from alone. Snap recently cut about 1,000 jobs, and Block said it would eliminate more than 4,000 roles as the tech sector keeps shifting toward AI and leaner staffing. Block CEO Jack Dorsey even said he believes most companies will reach the same conclusion within a year, whether they like it or not. Zuckerberg, meanwhile, has argued that AI may somehow lead companies to hire more people, even while the industry keeps trimming headcount. Meta shares rose about 2 percent in Friday trading after the report, which tells you everything you need to know about priorities in today’s market: layoffs happen, executives talk about the future, and investors cheer as if pink slips are some kind of productivity miracle.

Mark Zuckerberg just argued that AI will force companies to hire more people.
Not fewer.
Three and a half billion people use Meta every day.
Not one of them has a phone number to call.
