New allegations say Rep. Eric Swalwell sent explicit videos to women online

Fresh accusations pile up

Former Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell is now facing another round of ugly allegations, and this time the claims involve sexually explicit messages sent to women online. According to a report cited by Mediaite and CNN, multiple women said Swalwell sent them disturbing content, including videos of himself masturbating, after using Snapchat to present himself as a bold defender of democracy. That is a pretty wild way to build public trust, unless the goal was to make the public trust their eye-rolls more than their politicians. The report says more than a dozen women spoke with CNN about uncomfortable interactions with Swalwell over the past decade, both in person and online.

The Snapchat image did not age well

Swalwell once boasted that social media could help restore faith in democracy, and Snapchat was part of that pitch. In 2016, he told The Hill that opening up communication could rebuild trust, and he was even hailed as the Snapchat king of Congress. That title sounds less impressive now. The new allegations paint a very different picture, one where a politician who sold himself as modern and relatable may have crossed lines with the very people he was trying to impress. If this is what political outreach looks like in the age of digital “transparency,” voters may start longing for the old-fashioned kind of embarrassment, the kind that at least stays off the internet.

More questions for Democrats

The report also says Swalwell was still messaging a former intern on Snapchat as recently as this month, which only adds to the growing pile of questions around his conduct. His critics say the pattern is impossible to ignore, especially for a man who was reportedly aiming for higher office in California not long ago. The larger issue is simple. Democrats spent years acting like character did not matter as long as the messaging sounded polished, and now the cracks are showing everywhere. When the party keeps elevating these people, it should not be shocked when the public notices the rot under the shiny logo.
