Katie Zacharia Says a Hostile Fox News Culture Contributed to Her Departure

Zacharia Breaks Her Silence

Katie Zacharia has spoken publicly about her sudden departure as White House press secretary, a position she held for less than a week. Zacharia said she had “great relationships” with White House staff, but suggested Fox News played a major role in her exit. She described the network’s treatment as hostile and said that hostility was “very likely” the reason she left.

Fox Interviews Put Her Credentials Under Pressure

Sean Hannity questioned Zacharia about her first White House press briefing and her legal background during an appearance the night before she resigned. The following morning, Fox & Friends also pressed her about those issues. Zacharia had identified herself as a lawyer and held a Juris Doctor degree from Pepperdine University, but she had not passed the bar exam. The term “lawyer” can be used broadly for a law-school graduate, but left-wing media treated the distinction as a résumé scandal. Zacharia left the position on October 16. President Trump said she had been treated “very badly” and unfairly by the media, adding that Fox News had been too “tough” on her.

Questions About a Deliberate Setup

Newsmax host Rob Finnerty said he was “shocked by the Hannity treatment” and asked whether the interviews had been arranged to go badly on purpose. Zacharia said she was “just as perplexed.” She noted that Hannity had asked her earlier in the year to report for Fox as a correspondent and that she previously had a strong rapport with him and his team. She also said she had maintained good relationships with other Fox hosts, including Trace Gallagher and Jesse Watters, appearing on their programs weekly or every other week. Politico had previously accused White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles of being behind a “sanctioned hit” by Fox News, but later issued a correction stating that Wiles did not play a direct role in setting up the interview.

Why Zacharia Says She Was Caught Off Guard

Zacharia contrasted the Hannity interview with her appearances on CNN, where she said “the gloves are on” and “I’m ready to go.” She said the Hannity interview was different because she believed they had a friendly relationship and Hannity had made statements defending her on Tuesday, October 13. Because of that history, she said she was not prepared for the hostility she received. Her account does not establish whether the interviews were deliberately arranged to damage her, but it explains why the questioning felt so unexpected from her perspective.
