Former first lady Michelle Obama sparked a fresh round of backlash after comments on her “IMO” podcast with her brother Craig Robinson, where guest Jon Stewart talked about missing the energy and routine of having his children at home. Stewart said the “energy and excitement” of kids being around was “so incredible.” Obama answered, “I don’t. I love them. I’m going to see them tonight for dinner. I love them,” then added that Barack Obama cried when their daughters went to college while she was more like, “Bye, goodbye.” She said Friday nights were no longer “wrecked with terror and fear” over questions like, “Where are you? Where are you?” and said she loves their “emancipation and growth.” Stewart appeared to try to soften the moment by talking about missing the “job” of parenting because it gave his life meaning and pattern, but Obama responded, “I’m good.” Well, that certainly is one way to describe motherhood, though Hallmark may not be rushing to print it on a card.

The Timing Made the Remarks Even Harder to Ignore
The reaction was not just about what Obama said, but when she said it. The comments surfaced while jury deliberations were underway in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial, a case centered on whether the mother of three meets Massachusetts’ not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity standard after strangling her children. That tragedy has already stirred a disturbing public debate about the burdens and “emotional labor” of motherhood, including social media comments from some who said they do not condone what Clancy did but understand her despair. One widely shared post featured an OB-GYN with three children saying she was “proud” of Lindsay Clancy and adding, “I don’t know what else you could have done.” In that kind of moment, casual talk about being relieved that the kids are gone hits very differently. Mothers and fathers can joke about the chaos of raising kids, of course, but timing matters, especially when the national conversation is already sitting on a powder keg.

Walsh and Krakauer Put the Backlash in Blunt Terms
Daily Wire commentator Matt Walsh did not hold back, accusing Obama of sounding like “a total raging narcissist.” Walsh argued that Obama had two children and was rich and famous for much of their childhoods, saying she likely had “a fleet of nannies and assistants” handling much of the daily work, yet still spoke as if she could not wait for the kids to leave. SiriusXM producer Steve Krakauer was even shorter, writing, “This is legitimately psychotic.” Those are sharp words, but the clip gave critics plenty to work with. Obama did say she loves her daughters, and nobody should pretend otherwise, but public figures with microphones do not get to act surprised when their own words cause a firestorm. If you describe parenting like a prison sentence ending, people are going to notice, especially when the country is already wrestling with a heartbreaking case involving children.
