Voters Face Reported Midterm Voting Issues in Multiple States and Counties

Several counties reported voting-equipment problems, scanner rejections, technical delays, or ballots placed in emergency containers on Election Day. The reports below draw on local news, official statements, and voter accounts on social media.

Westchester Scanners Fail Early

In Westchester County, New York, ballot scanners across the county stopped accepting paper ballots shortly after polls opened at 6 a.m. The county Board of Elections first blamed ballot thickness, then revised its statement to cite “an issue involving paper ballots.” Voters were told to place completed ballots into designated orange emergency ballot bags for later counting. County Executive Ken Jenkins called the situation a “debacle” and promised a bipartisan review. Rep. Mike Lawler urged voters to stay in line, saying every scanner was affected and every ballot would be counted. New York Attorney General Letitia James said her office was monitoring the issue.

Fulton County Considers Rescan of 1,069 Early Ballots

In Fulton County, Georgia, Elections Director Nadine Williams notified the Secretary of State that two scanners failed during early voting, leaving 1,069 ballots unread on their original machines. One failure affected 361 ballots at Mechanicsville Library on October 21 after a wheelchair allegedly rolled over a power cable. Another affected 708 ballots at Hugh C. Conley Recreation Center on October 26 after a persistent paper-jam error with no visible jam. Officials planned to transfer memory cards or publicly rescan the paper ballots after polls closed, pending board approval. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said the machines were removed as a precaution. Voters also reportedly received fake text messages claiming that their polling places had changed.

Florida Check-In Delays Clear Quickly

In Broward County, Florida, technical issues with a barcode-scanning system used to issue the correct ballot in redistricted precincts delayed check-in at multiple locations for about 20 minutes after polls opened at 7 a.m. Supervisor of Elections Joe Scott said the glitch was fixed by approximately 7:20 a.m., no one voted on the wrong ballot, and some voters left the line rather than wait. Flooding also forced the relocation of at least one polling place, the Paradise Village clubhouse in Davie, to Tree Tops Park.

Pennsylvania Counties Report Scanner Problems

Voter reports from several Pennsylvania counties described different equipment and ballot-handling problems. In Beaver County, a voter said a ballot scanner was not working and ballots were placed in a box for scanning after polls closed. In Luzerne County, a Facebook screenshot indicated that no ballot bin was attached, so ballots went into a holding box; the Republican National Committee later said it flagged and fixed the issue. In Franklin County, a report claimed that a machine was down at 7 a.m., some voters were turned away, and ballots were later placed “in a folder.” In Centre County, a report described a jammed scanner at a Lions Club site, with ballots directed to a lower slot for later scanning. The source report presented these as separate voter accounts rather than as one countywide failure.

Chester County Receives Extra Voting Time

Machine setup issues delayed the opening of three precincts in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The Court of Common Pleas granted a petition extending voting hours by 30 minutes at those locations, keeping them open until 8:30 p.m. The affected sites were Precinct 201, Easttown 3, at Easttown Township Library in Berwyn; Precinct 210, Easttown 6, at St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Devon; and Precinct 244, East Goshen 2, at Goshen Baptist Church. Ballots cast after 8 p.m. at the affected sites were to be treated as provisional ballots.

Social Media Posts Show Additional Accounts

The report included social-media posts alongside local news and official statements and noted that the list could be updated if more issues emerged. Social-media reports can help identify problems quickly, but details should be reviewed against statements from election officials and county authorities.
