Newsom’s Numbers Deserve a Close Look
California Governor Gavin Newsom is once again making headlines, and not for anything that would make a regular taxpayer cheer. Reports say his political action committee spent more than $1.5 million buying copies of his new memoir, which accounted for roughly two-thirds of all copies sold nationwide. That kind of boost is not exactly the same thing as the old-fashioned method of winning readers one by one. It is more like buying your own applause and calling it a standing ovation. If this is what passes for organic enthusiasm, then the term has been stretched farther than a California budget promise.
A Best Seller With Training Wheels
The book, Young Man in a Hurry, was promoted as a success and helped land on the New York Times bestseller list, but the sales picture now looks a lot less impressive. Campaign finance filings point to a political machine doing heavy lifting behind the scenes, which is not a great look for a man who may have bigger ambitions in 2028. Democrats love to talk about authenticity until the receipts come out, and then suddenly everybody is shocked that a political memoir might be part campaign prop, part vanity project. Newsom has spent years building a national brand, but this episode makes that brand look more polished than genuine.
The Self-Love Tour Keeps Rolling
Victor Nieves mocked the governor’s obvious fondness for himself, and it is hard to argue with the basic point. Newsom has long projected the image of a polished national Democrat, but these book-sale numbers suggest that the hype may be doing more work than the public itself. When a politician’s own PAC is buying stacks of his memoir, people are right to ask whether the book is a real hit or just a well-funded ego exercise. Conservatives have seen this playbook before. Democrats build the image, the media repeats it, and then the same crowd acts stunned when somebody notices the smoke machine is plugged in.
