James Talarico is running as a Democrat for U.S. Senate in Texas and wants voters to think he is a moderate. But posts from his time as a sixth grade public school teacher show classroom projects tied to President Obama and the 2012 election. Pictures and write ups from that period show students writing “Obama memoirs” and classroom displays celebrating the election result. That raises a simple question for voters: should a teacher use class time for political celebrations?
Why Parents Should Care
Parents send teachers to school to teach reading, math, and how to be good citizens. They do not send them to front a political campaign. If students were asked to write from the perspective of the Obama family and to put campaign logos on classroom walls then the line between civic education and political promotion was blurred. Schools should present facts and encourage critical thinking, not hand out fan mail assignments for a political candidate.
How Talarico Framed It
In a social media post from November 2012, Talarico wrote that students finished “Obama memoirs” as part of a narrative non fiction unit. He praised the students and posted photos showing essays and campaign imagery. Supporters will say this was teaching about elections and narrative writing. Skeptics will say the writing assignment had a clear partisan tilt. Either way voters should weigh classroom choices when assessing a candidate for higher office.
What This Means for the Race
Campaigns are built on trust. If a nominee used a classroom to push a political view parents and voters will want answers about what else he has pushed and why. Candidates who talk about unity and moderation have to explain actions that look partisan. That is not politics as usual. That is a practical question about judgment and priorities in public schools that matter to families across Texas.
