Tragedy at a Los Angeles Campus
An 18-year-old student died Wednesday afternoon after going over a fourth-floor balcony at Benjamin Franklin High School in Los Angeles’ Highland Park neighborhood. Los Angeles City Fire responded to a report of a fall, found a student who had fallen from a four-story building, and rushed him to a hospital. LAPD later confirmed the death. Police described the victim as a male juvenile, while FOX 11 reported he was 18. His name has not been released.
Video Places a Classroom Fight Before the Fall
Video obtained by local news shows a physical fight during class. A student wearing a backpack repeatedly punched a classmate with reddish hair while a teacher yelled for them to stop. After the fight appeared to calm down, the backpack-wearing student landed another punch. Later footage shows the reddish-haired student walking through a fourth-floor corridor, grabbing the balcony railing, lifting himself over it, and falling four stories. The railing appears to reach about chest height in the footage, which has prompted questions about whether the fall was accidental. That visual detail is not a police conclusion. The footage is disturbing, but it does not explain why the fight began or what the student was experiencing in those moments.
Witnesses Describe Fear and Confusion
One student witness told FOX 11 that he heard rumbling and saw students fighting before seeing a student go over the fourth-floor railing. Junior Leah Diaz told NBC Los Angeles that after fourth period, students looked worried and scared, with people crying. Her description captures the fear that spread through the halls after the incident. The school community was left to deal with a death that unfolded in minutes while investigators began sorting video from eyewitness accounts.
Police Say Key Questions Remain
LAPD said there is no evidence of foul play. FOX 11, citing preliminary police findings, reported investigators do not believe the student was being actively followed or threatened when he went over the railing. FOX 11 also reported, based on its review of the video, that the student appeared to be chased by the other student. That reported interpretation has not been established as an official finding. The other student involved in the fight has been identified and interviewed, but no arrests or charges have been announced. Police, school police, and the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner are reviewing video and witness statements, including whether head trauma from the fight may have left the teen disoriented. News reports have described the fall as an apparent suicide, but neither the motive nor that characterization has been confirmed.
School Locks Down and Brings in Support
LAUSD initially told families the campus was locked down for a “medical emergency.” Los Angeles School Police said every gate and door would remain locked until law enforcement gave the all-clear and said procedures were being followed under district policy. Principal Marine Davtyan later told the school community through an LAUSD spokesperson that privacy laws limited what could be shared. Mental-health staff were to be on campus Thursday.
Separately, social-media users pointed to classroom displays that appeared to include the flags of China and Colombia, an LGBTQ pride flag, and a portrait they described as Frida Kahlo. Those observations are part of the public discussion, but the supplied details do not establish any connection between the displays and the death.
