A Heated California Showdown
Republican gubernatorial nominee Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra faced off in their first—and perhaps only—California gubernatorial debate. The one-hour CNN event covered taxes, immigration, housing, and artificial intelligence, but immigration produced the sharpest clash. Becerra argued for immigration reform and criticized Hilton’s support for federal immigration enforcement in California. Hilton then shifted the discussion from broad policy promises to Becerra’s record as secretary of Health and Human Services under President Joe Biden. Political debates often become a parade of talking points, but this exchange centered on a specific question of accountability.
Hilton Raises the Missing Children Issue
Hilton said Becerra had been responsible for the welfare of 479,000 unaccompanied migrant children during his four years at HHS. He accused Becerra’s department of dismantling vetting procedures that should have helped place children with safe families or sponsors. Hilton further claimed that thousands of children were sent into the hands of child sex and labor traffickers. He said more than 100,000 children were still missing and added that 100,000 of the children were under age 10. Hilton also criticized Becerra for lecturing others about immigration instead of apologizing for what Hilton described as a failure to protect vulnerable children. Those were not subtle remarks, and they put Becerra’s former Cabinet post directly at the center of the debate.
Becerra Calls the Claims Talking Points
Becerra pushed back by dismissing Hilton’s accusations as “retread Trump talking points.” Hilton quickly answered that the information came from The New York Times, adding that the newspaper had won a Pulitzer Prize for its reporting. The exchange showed the candidates arguing over more than immigration policy. Hilton was demanding that Becerra answer for what happened to children for whom his department was responsible, while Becerra returned to immigration reform and criticism of Trump. A video of the confrontation was posted on X, where the account sharing it described the moment as a political smackdown.

This was a total SMACKDOWN.
Far-left Democrat Xavier Becerra just got completely EXPOSED by Republican Steve Hilton for losing track of hundreds of thousands of migrant children during his time as HHS Secretary.
